Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between boulder, crystal, and black opal?

Boulder opal forms in ironstone and is cut with the host rock attached — deep colours on a dark backing. Crystal opal is translucent and lets light pass through. Black opal (from Lightning Ridge) has the darkest body tone and brightest play of colour; it's the rarest and most valuable of the three.

Are opal rings durable enough for everyday wear?

Solid Australian opal sits around 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale — softer than diamond or sapphire but worn confidently if you don't bash it against hard surfaces. Remove before manual work, gardening, or the gym. Protective bezel settings outlast claw settings on rings worn every day.

Do opals need special care?

Don't soak them, and don't store them in a very dry environment for long periods. A quick wipe with a soft damp cloth is all you need. Solid opals tolerate everyday wear; we don't sell doublets or triplets, so you don't need to worry about water damage.
